What kind of skating do you do?
Aggressive fitness, skate dance, free movement
Tell us more about yourself
Began inline skating in 1988 w/ early Rollerblade model (bolts, washers, nuts vintage)... switching to K2 models for the next couple of decades. Recently tried Rollerblade again, having an interest in the cool lacing system on the Crossfire 4.0's. Have skated aggressively ever since starting in '88. It is what keeps me alive, happy, fit and trim... it is the great escape from the day's issues. I skate 4-5 days per week, 90 minutes to 2 hrs, doing an intervals mix of 15 minute distance, then 5-10 minutes of dance and play skating (always moving), then repeat til exhausted. Enjoy speed maneuvers through tricky sections of park. Always skate w/ driving classic rock, esp. Pink Floyd and similar, in my ears. Winter sucks when trails get icy and climate cold (we are at 7000 ft)... need indoor options then. I enjoy the social aspects of getting to know over the years the children and adults in the park I skate in (Santa Fe River Park, Santa Fe, New Mexico, US). A big treat is to visit my son in Venice, CA and do 2-3 days of marathon skating along the L.A. coastline. Key secret: Always keep the "play" in skating.

Am researching switch to (addition of) speed skates to my rec/fitness skating

Joining the Inline Planet community and reading web-wide more about speed skating (even for recreational and fitness purposes, if not competitive), I'm somewhat eager to take the plunge and acquire my first pair of speed-type skates (big wheels, long frame, low cuff boot, speedy ride). I'm a very proficient rec/fitness skater (2 decades of aggressive skating) and feel that I'll adapt to speed-type skates well and relish the thought of so much wheel base and small boot and smooth long ride.

My skating venue of choice in Santa Fe, New Mexico

(I've excerpted and augmented this from a reply I posted on another member's page)

I was asked about skating on the roads in Santa Fe. In Santa Fe I've done some road skating, but generally avoid it because I don't trust people in cars (for good reason), and the roads and shoulders in SFe can be really flaky. Believe it or not, I've been skating for 12 years in the same park mostly... Santa Fe River Park along West Alameda and Alto St. There's about 1.5 miles of baby smooth concrete and wide si… Continue

The exploded skate -- when my wheel frame detached at high speed

I was doing a skate workout in the park on this evening, and about 30 minutes into the workout, while accelerating down a long downgrade stretch of smooth pavement, the truck assembly -- the frame that holds the wheels and attaches to the skate boot -- detached at one end leading to a complete loss of control on that o… Continue

HEY GREG, I was wondering how that transition to speed skates is going or if it ever happened. I bought my first big wheel, low boots a few months ago and my feet/ ankles are just now recovering. FYI weve got a little speed group skating on sunday mornings in albuquerque. We start at 7;00 am and go about two hours.

HI Greg!

Sounds like we're similar in the skating emphasis of fitness and fun. I skate about 3-4 times a week, 15-20 miles with rollerski poles on the many bikepaths and quieter streets around Albuquerque. My favorite starts at I-25 and Paseo, climb Paseo on a wide bikepath, south along tramway and up into High Desert neighborhood. I gain about 700 feet and have a 45 minute super-G run back.

Where do you do your over-the-road skating in Santa Fe? I've done a few skates there, setting out from the downtown area, out toward St. Vincents, or El Gancho, and up into the residential streets in the foothills. It all seems pretty tight, with traffic and not much shoulders.

That's quite a blowout on the skate assembly. I just got some K2 motos. I had 6200 miles on my old K2 Catalysts. The Motos are okay, but I like more of a high-wrap boot and less squooshy. Also they have the different size bearings so my old powell swiss won't fit in them...and they have those pesky little plastic things that pop out when you rotate them.

Anyways thanks for checking in. --Don Dean

Greg,

Thanks for your kind words. I haven't had my skates on in a month. Today that changes, because of you. You have inspired me. It means more than you could ever know.

Just ordered a pair of K2 Moto 100's. Going to 100mm-90mm config for first time... I know I'll like the larger wheels (been doing 84mm for a long while). Also curious about the self-adapting boot liner they pitch. Fun fun fun. Santa Claus arrives in a FedEx truck tomorrow.

Quest for the best skate for me (a neverending story being revisited freshly)

I've been actively and aggressively skating for a pretty long time... since 1988. So I've been through many many pairs of skates. I started w Rollerblades because they were the only thing available at the time, then discovered the comfort and design of K2 skates, which I stayed with for most of the next 15-20 years. Last year, I became intrigued with the lacing system (and soft boot design) of the Rollerblade Crossfire 4.0 skate, and have enjoyed them... though, I've had two serious equipment failures with them... one, the wheel frame (yes, the metal frame that holds the wheels) became detached in the middle of a high speed run and put me in serious danger, and two, the lace on one boot broke while skating (on the replacement skates), requiring factory repair.

I need a skate that is light and fast, extremely durable, preferably (but not required) has a nice lacing system like the one on the Crossfire 4.0 (single pull string that tightens entire system). I've been using 84mm 84a wheels for a good while -- my favorites to-date have been Labeda Team Racing (the purple ones). But I'm very open to using larger wheels. And, I've been trying 91a hardness lately and like, generally.

I'm 210 pounds, experience wheel wear and go through new wheels frequently, skate aggressively, strongly, and do tricks (e.g. dancing, light jumping, twirling, fancy display stuff). My skates have to be tough.

What's out there for that? I'm looking! I'm probably way out of date with my knowledge of what the latest greatest is for aggressive inline fitness cross-training skates. Thanks, dear community. :)

I had a similar experience in a pair of Rollerblade Astro's last year. The rear bolt broke through the plastic. Thankfully I was headed up hill and not going down it. The bigbox retailer didn't want to accept the return since the skates had been use…

Thanks, Shawn. I will contact you when I get to that point, which is more likely sometime in November. Greg

Thanks for that clarifying info, Dean. What? No microwaveable boots? Oh darn. :) I do like the fact it says you can re-heat the boots more than once. It takes some of the tension off of fearing you'll screw it up the first time.

Ah, the one-at-time solution. How logical is THAT! Good call. Frames on, too.

Nice! I've wanted to apply some breakdance techniques to my skate dancing. This resembles some of what I have in mind.

Arghhh! I just went to read that story of the ripped boot on a new pair of Jets. What a shame. I wonder what the issue was, bad materials or just a defective boot? Sheesh. I've not yet had the pleasure of heat molding a pair of skates, but it seems…

Exciting to hear your Jet experiences. I too am 6' and 210lbs. I'm eager to experience 110mm's too. It's undoubtedly like how I felt when I went from 76mm (long time ago) to 80mm, then from 80mm to 84mm, then recently to 100mm. Love the smooth fast…

Though I haven't been there, it is a NASCAR race track facility, though the skating surface may be in another part of the venue. I await the explanation too.

Well skate under PCH and up to San Vincente, you can go all the way to the LA SM border in a wide bike lane next to the road - turn right and go around the Brentwood Country Club, keep turning right and you will be back at San Vincente again. This m…

I knew that the trail ends at the foot of Palos Verdes. Just saying that from the North end (Temescal Canyon) to Venice Beach and return it is not pleasant unless you skate slow. Have done it plenty of times and only do now when I am desperated. Can…

Cool and portable. Good series of videos, too, Shawn. I've never used a slideboard, but may want to incorporate that into the winter down time. I live in a dry low-humidity environment, and I bet you build up a huge static charge when sliding like t…
