That's all I've got so far.

Touristas on Friday.
Took the Metra rail downtown with skate buds John C., and Renee C. we hooked up with Luke S., and John G..
Went to the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) and checked out the new observation portals they have
sticking outside the building 113 floors up. Very, very cool, they've only been open a few weeks.
John C. has a photo of Renee and I doing wall sits with our backs facing whats seems like nothing.
Can't wait to see those shots.
We ate German food, had a beer or two, and played touristas the rest of the evening.

Saturday 10K
Got up pretty early and headed over to get my race packet.
I was able to park next to the expo tent becasue it was so early. picked up the packet, and went back the the hotel to eat breakfast.
The Hilton is less than a mile from the main even area. Very handy.
Headed back over @ about 7:30 to get a look around.
My race (Adv 10K) was not supposed to start till 8:20, but I wanted to skate a bit stretch the legs and get a good look at the course.
I measured it with my garmin, and came up with almost exactly 1 mile, just a shade over. There were a few bumps out there, and some patches of street

dampness. All in all nice and smooth with plenty of room to pass or be passed. You just had to pay attention.
6 laps...
The race went off about 30 minutes late, so there was a lot of pacing around, trying to stay loose.
At the line there were 13 of us, 12 men , and one very fast girl. I knew it was going to be very fast, and it was.
Off the start I quickly got out front and set a pretty hard pace down the west side of the loop. there was bit of spread towards the first turn, but it

quickly settled into a pace line. I lead the 1st lap to the line, and felt pretty good. so pulled off, and got onto the back, waiting and watching.
there were a few breaks, but they quickly got reeled in. the east side of the course is a slight uphill and into the wind, so I knew the finish would be

tough. Everyone was skating hard. Our average pace was under 3:00 MPL. On the last lap the eventual winner James Linton took off and kinda caught me

slack jawed.. He got about 20-30 feet on me, and I just could not make it up going up the hill on the last lap. I felt pressure from behind and accelerated a bit to keep that person back there. I went across the line about 3 seconds back in 2nd place. Total time was a 17:26. Probably the fastest 10k I've ever done. I was happy more for the result than the time. I knew who I would be chasing and racing tomorrow...:)

Sunday Marathon
Up early and ready to go. Race was to start @ 8:00AM
Skated over the to S/F line/Expo area from the hotel. The Advanced/Fitness race would end with plenty of time to skate back to the hotel, shower, pack,

Checkout, and head back to the race to watch the pros skate @ 10:30
Conditions were perfect, nice and cool, with some wind to make it interesting. The course has some elevation change on it, nothing I would consider to

be too drastic. I was glad to have driven it the day before.
We pretty much went off right @ 8:00. A very large pack of Advanced/fitness skaters, a couple hundred at least. I was very pleased to see the good

turnout. The racing would be good today. 3 laps on a long, almost 9 mile course.
At the start I was in the top 8. All I wanted to do was stay up front, and never get any farther back than about 8th-10th. in case someone broke, I

wanted to be there for it. Fairly uneventful on the 1st half of the 1st lap. everyone up front pretty much stayed together, with some give and take.
On the back side after heading up the hills into the wind, I decided to take off down probably the longest hill on the course. I pulled out and shot

past the leaders. By the time I looked back the pack was about 200 yards back, and I had no one on my wheel. My goal was to trim the pack down to as few

people as I could. I succeeded in doing that. I think there was 20-30 when I made the break, maybe more. I try not to look back to much as that is when

bad stuff happens (something I learned the hard way indoors) By the time the chase pack caught up to me, it was down to less than 10 skaters. I was

familiar with all but 3 of them. Mission accomplshed. Now we can settle in and skate, and settle it in the last mile or so. After that the race was pretty uneventful. there were a few breaks up the hills, but everyone in the group was able to match. We dropped a couple more skaters in lap 2, and on the last lap there were only 8 of us. The Akana Sisters, two guys I knew from Missouri, a youngster, and two other guys I did not know before today. One was the guy who had beaten me in the 10K the previous day, and the other was a team Rainbo skater. with about 1.5 miles to go, the pace really heated up. I knew who I was skating against, and that there was little chance that I would outsprint all the kids in the pack. I had 2 guys to beat. I'm not much of a sprinter, but I was able to beat 1 of the 2. A last gasp surge got me by him. GPS said 26.52 miles 1:23:13, 5 seconds off the back of the kid who won. when I say kid, I mean a 14 year old...:) I was the oldest in the pack by at least 10 years, so I was very happy with a 7th place in the overall and a 1st place in 40-49 out of 19. I also extended my lead in the NROC Advanced Masters Men championship, as I was the top Master 35-45 too. 3 events down one to go for me. Duluth is the next NROC event for me.
Overall I met all my goals. I put a Hoffmann, on the podium @ Hoffman Estates...

This is a fantastic event, that I will be at again next year. There were a few bumps, but nothing that I would really get worked up over.
Put this one on your calendar.. it's getting bigger, and bigger.
I made a point to thank every volunteer I came into contact with. without them, the event would not been nearly as good as it was.
Thank you Team Rainbo, and Peter S. for putting on a great event!!
Hi, Hoffmonster ... Thanks for the report and congrats on a your performance! ... I tried calling you after the race but maybe all I had was your home number. ... I wanted to post something about the advanced marathon as part of the live blog. ... Maybe next time. - Robert
